English Reading Clubs with Ying-Chu Chen and Josh Gracio

Starting September 30, 2023, Ying-Chu Chen participated in a comprehensive English Reading Club focused on the multidisciplinary aspects of human health and wellness. Led by Josh Gracio, the group embarked on a three-week intellectual exploration of lifestyle factors, nutrition, and physical activity, grounding their discussions in scientific literature and data.

During the first week, the group examined “A Comprehensive Guide to Health and Wellness for International Students.” Rather than simply reviewing general advice, participants analyzed data and expert insights to understand the unique physiological and psychological stressors faced by students in new environments. This session established a strong foundation for understanding evidence-based wellness strategies.

The textual analysis in the second week centered on “Unlocking the Secrets of Nutrition.” The reading group dissected the significance of balanced diets, moving beyond basic macronutrients to deeply discuss the behavioral mechanisms of portion control and mindful eating. Participants explored how self-regulation and intentionality apply to dietary habits to maintain homeostasis and overall well-being.

In the final week, the discussion transitioned to “The World of Exercise and Physical Activity: A Journey to Motivation, Well-being, and Health Statistics.” The attendees grappled with the psychological and physiological mechanisms that drive exercise adherence. By reviewing current health statistics, the group synthesized how both acute and chronic physical activity positively impact physical health and cognitive function.

These weekly discussions provided a rigorous platform to dissect the complex architecture of human wellness, challenging participants to integrate these scientific frameworks into both everyday life and academic research contexts.
